Adelaide has its very own seahorse farm. Located in Port Adelaide the Seahorse Farm is open seven days a week from 11am to 4pm. Seahorses are probably the most unusual of the fishes in the sea. There are many myths and legends that surround the seahorse. Their real name is Hippocampus, coming from the Greek word hippo meaning horse, and campus meaning sea monster. These guys are no sea monster. Seahorses have a horse shaped head and a tail that can grasp things, a pouch for the young and eyes that can move independently of each other. With small fins that emerge from bony body armor it is amazing to see them moving around. The male seahorse is the one to get pregnant, goes through labor and has the baby seahorses.
It has always been the uniqueness that has made seahorses so sought after. Australian Seahorses, Seadragons and Pipefish have been protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1988. Harvesting of seahorses continues in other parts of the world in unsustainable levels. In 1987 around twenty million seahorses were taken from the wild each year. These seahorses are used to supply the Herbal Medicine Trade and meat and fish markets. It is the uniqueness of the creatures that make them so sought after. The Seahorse Farm, farms five of the fifty known species of seahorse found throughout the world. Check out all the details on the Seahorse Farm website, seahorse.com
